Mareas

Public Art

Ana Teresa Fernández

Commissioned by the San Francisco Arts Commission in partnership with the Port of San Francisco, Mareas is a permanent public artwork by artist Ana Teresa Fernández installed at the James R. Herman Cruise Terminal Plaza at Pier 27. The work marks the pedestrian entrance to the plaza and stands as the first permanent archway along San Francisco's Embarcadero waterfront.

Inspired by the underwater visual realm of the ocean, Mareas translates the refractive patterns of light traveling through water into the flowing form of a monumental archway. The sculpture's cascading blues evoke the motion of the bay, creating a vivid counterpoint to the vertical skyline while drawing visitors into connection with the water's edge.

Fabricated by One Hat One Hand in steel and polycarbonate resin supplied by 3Form Architectural Resin and Glass, the structure measures approximately 13 feet 3 inches tall by 26 feet 10 inches wide by 6 feet 11 inches deep. The material combination achieves both structural permanence and the luminous translucence essential to the artist's vision, transforming daily movement through the plaza into an immersive encounter with light, color, and place.

Blue skies, ribbons cut and a new landmark born.
