West Oakland's large, spacious warehouses were the primary factor that drew production design company One Hat One Hand from its headquarters of nearly two decades. Another factor, co-founder Marcus Guillard said, was "access to a workforce."

"It's challenging for the craftspeople who can't afford to live in San Francisco any more to pay to cross the bridge every day," Guillard explained to the Business Times in an interview. "But there are still a lot of people with diverse skillsets who manage to live in Oakland or nearby."

OAKLAND, California, September 14, 2026. One Hat One Hand (OHOH), the design and
fabrication company behind some of the Bay Area's most recognizable public art and workplace environments, today announced its move to a new facility at 1699 West Grand Avenue in Oakland. The new facility expands the company's footprint with offices and a production facility built specifically for the unique needs of One Hat One Hand's work.

Over the last several years, OHOH has seen significant growth. The company's project list has grown steadily larger and more complex, and the team outgrew its longtime San Francisco location.The facility was planned around how OHOH builds, and how projects move through departments including metal, wood and digital fabrication, into finishing, technology integration and pre-assembly and preparation for delivery and installation.

"One of the things that came up as we looked for a new home was just how unique our work really is," said Chrisray Collins, Co-Founder at One Hat One Hand. "People know us for completely different things depending on who you ask, and many are surprised by how our work spans sculpture to high end interiors, large scale events and music festivals as well as building façades and civic furniture. Being a custom fabricator means having millworks, metals, finishing, and digital experience integration departments all under one roof. Our 2025 acquisition of DEKA Fabrication was a natural extension of the growth we were already seeing in our metal department. Bringing all of our shops together in a purpose-built facility meant throwing out legacy models and building an entirely new facility."

The move follows a period of significant growth for the company, in 2025, which brought the team to nearly 50 staff. The expanded facility allows the company to respond to rising demand from architects, developers, builders and the Bay Area's most noteworthy companies.

OHOH's portfolio spans nearly two decades of Bay Area landmarks. Highlights include the recent addition of Mareas by Ana Teresa Fernandez on the Embarcadero, the original Outside Lands windmills and the updated version festivalgoers know today; workplace construction and millwork for many of the region's companies.

The Oakland campus brings every OHOH department under one roof: millwork, metalwork, finishing, design studio and technology integration. DEKA Fabrication anchors the metal side of the business with advanced fabrication of facades, gates and exterior architectural systems. The design studio and technology integration teams handle digital experience design, prototyping and the interactive elements now built into much of the company's public art and architectural features.

The company sees the move as an investment in Oakland itself. OHOH plans to hire from the city's deep pool of fabrication, design and trade talent, and has long been an active participant in the Oakland arts community.

One Hat One Hand built the new facility in concert with current client production, so work in progress moves with the team and client projects continue without interruption. The new facility will be entirely online by November 1, 2026.

Three more businesses on the Larkin corridor — Gateway Croissant, Ruru Kitchen and Deli Shack — will get decorative security gates funded by the Larkin Street Revival project. According to Marcus Guillard, owner of One Hat One Hand, the fabrication shop tasked with designing and installing the gates, they should be finished and installed in early October.

The Larkin Street Revival project, which intends to improve the neighborhood with beautification and safety efforts, was launched by a $5 million donation from cryptocurrency billionaire Chris Larsen.

Eric Ehler, owner of Outta Sight Pizza, was one of the first businesses on Larkin to get a new gate, back in February.

One Hat One Hand Announcement. One Hat One Hand is teaming up on a new public art sculpture for the Clara E. Chan Lee senior housing development at the Lake Merritt BART station, a project by EBALDC and Pyatok Architects at the historic corner of Oakland Chinatown. The piece is an anamorphic hanging sculpture that reads Oakland in Cantonese, honoring the southern Chinese immigrants who fought and organized to make this place their home. Created with Civic Design Studio and co artist Xiaorui Tsui, with 3D design by Sofía López of Civic Design Studio. The building is named for Clara E. Jenny Sabin Studio.
