Windmill
Public Art
Fourteen years after building the original Outside Lands windmills, One Hat One Hand returned, in partnership with Iron and Bloom, to fabricate their future-forward successor. The 80-foot kinetic sculpture was unveiled at the 2022 Outside Lands Music Festival in Golden Gate Park. It nods to the historic Murphy and Dutch Windmills at the western edge of the park while planting a new icon at the heart of the festival grounds.
The piece moves through sketching, 3D modeling and small-scale prototyping into a structure that responds to light, wind and human interaction. By day, it acts as a kinetic landmark and gathering place. By night, it becomes a beacon of light, holding equal weight in motion and at rest.
Fabrication relied on powder-coated steel and aluminum for structural durability, translucent panels for diffusing light, programmable LED systems for nighttime impact, and kinetic components engineered for the open park setting. Modular connections allow the sculpture to be assembled and broken down efficiently for festival deployment at scale. Engineering was led by AproE and Clark Reder, with finishing and components by Standard Metal Products, Royal Plywood, Graffico and Leon's Powdercoating.
Windmill is a landmark, a meeting place and a memory of the festival, anchoring the Outside Lands experience with wonder, delight and shared spectacle.
A San Francisco icon reimagined with a space age future-forward spin!
Feedback
"We've had the pleasure of working repeatedly with OHOH (often on festivals), and watching them grow significantly, in size, scale, ambition, and family. We've worked with a handful of their project and production managers, estimators, designers, artisans, illustrators, machinists, and more; each one is as gracious, inventive, dedicated and proud as the last. And even with all that growth, Marcus and Chrisray have always held personal time for us. Whether it's a job in California or New York, whether it's a 35' sculpture or a boutique lightbox, we are thrilled and eager to give OHOH a call." WILLIAM IRONS
